Nutrition

Historical Background of Nutrition is divided into four Eras.

I. Naturalistic Era (400 BC to 1750 AD)
     - Hippocrates known "as the father of medicine" was the first physician who ahow an interest in nutrition at that time. Characterized by many vague ideas concerning taboos, magical powers and medicinal values associated with different food.

II. Chemical-Analytical Era (1750 - 1900)
     - Lavoiser gained the name, Father of Nutrition because of his respiration and oxidation studies. It was during this period that chemical studies were conducted which led to the discoveries of oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen.

III. Biological Era (1900 - 1955)
     - Casimir Funk introduced in this era. There were more discoveries of factors with vitamin like properties, which were identified as essential elements ofthe human diet and others for various aspects of animals.

IV. Cellular or Mollecular Era (1955 - Present)
     - In this era, many new techniques have made it possible to study the nutrient needs or individual cells and even of the subcellular component of organelles of cells. Study on the molecular level are done to enhance understanding of nutrition.

Basic Tools in the study of Nutrition:

Food Guide - is a qualitative tool in assessing the nutritional adequacy of a diet. It translate quantitative nutritional requirement into simple practical foods.

Dietary Standards/Guidelines - are compilation of nutrient requirements or allowances in specific quantities.

Dietary Requirements - is the minimum amount of nutrient to attain good health.

Dietary Allowance - is the minimum requirements plus safety factor or margin of safety to account for individual variation.

Food Composition Tables - are tables of chemical composition of food which undergo analysis and sampling method set up after years of meticulous work.

Food Exchange List - is a grouping of common foods that have/practically the same amount of protein, carbohydrate and fats.

Different food groups according to their classification:

I. Body Building Foods (Grow)
     - called GROW food groups. This food are rich in protein and can repair body tissues for growth, maintenance, develop resistance to infections and gives additional energy.
     - Example: Meat, Milk, Chicken, Legumes, Eggs

II. Body Regulating Foods (Glow)
     - foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals. They help our body work properly by regulating processes such as digestion, excretion, respiration and circulation.
     - Example: Green leafy vegetables

III. Energy giving foods (Go)
     - food that are rich in carbohydrates and fats that are the body's main source of energy.
     - Example: Rice, Corn, Bread, Root crops

Nutrition

Definition Of Terms:

Nutrition - is defined as the sum of processed involved in eating, digesting, absorbing and using nutrients. It is the study of food in relation to maintenance, growth and energy. It is particularly concerned with identifying those nutrients and substances in foods that foster the development of a strong body, promote good health.

Food - is any substance, organic or inorganic which when ingested nourishes the body by building and repairing tissues, supplying heat; and energy, regulating body processes. It is the basic necessity of a person aside from clothing and shelter.

Nutrients - any chemical substances present in food that provides the body with energy or with the building materials required for normal metabolic functioning.

Health - the condition of being sound of the body, mind or spirit freedom from physical pain or disease.

Calorie -  is a unit measure for energy. The amount of energy contained in food and expected by humans and animals which is measured in kilo calories (thousands of calories). The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of a gram of water 1 degree centigrade. Equal to 4.1850 joules (j). 1 kcal is equal to 1000 calories.

Basic Concept Of Nutrition:

1. Adequate nutrition is essential to good health.
2. The nutrients in the body are in dynamic equilibrium.
3. Dietary intake and nutrient needs should be individualized.
4. Nutrient content in food is variable.
5. Human requirements for nutrients are known for some and have to be determine as yet for others.
6. An adequate diet is the foundation of good nutrition and it should consist of wide variety of foods.
7. The psychological functions of foods are attributed to the roles of the nutrient.
8. Malnutrition is brought about by a faulty diet and or by conditioning factors like hereditary, infections, ingestion of certain drugs and parasitism.
9. Nutrition education, abundant food supply and the use of various resources are needed to improve nutritional state of a population.
10. The study of nutrition is interrelated with allied arts and sciences: food science and technology, nursing and medical fields, behavioral sciences, chemistry, biology, etc.

Orpington Chickens

Color and Appearance
The Orpington are large types of chickens with a soft appearance. It has a wide chest, broad back, and small head and tail.

They originally came in black, white, buff and blue. Other varieties have also been developed including porcelain (speckled), red, mottled and birchen.

Origin
The original Orpington (the Black) was developed in 1886 by William Cook. He crossed many different breeds of chickens, chiefly Minorcas, Langshans and Plymouth Rocks, to create the new hybrid bird.

Size
The Orpington is a heavy breed, weighing from 7 lb (3.2 kg) to 10 lb (4.5 kg). Its soft, profuse feathering makes it appear even larger than it is.

Temperament
Docile, affectionate and easily handled types of chickens.

Uses
The Orpington was bred as a dual-purpose breed, famous for good egg laying capacity (from 110 to 160 beige eggs/year even through winter), moderately early maturity, and good carcass qualities. Hens may go broody.

Diabetes Risk May Be Increased By Insufficient Sleep

Short sleep times, experienced by many individuals in Westernized societies, may contribute to the development of insulin resistance and reduced glucose tolerance, which in turn may increase the long-term risk of diabetes, according to a new study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM).

Sleep curtailment is an increasingly common aspect of the Western lifestyle, which is characterized by physical inactivity and overeating. Today, many Americans sleep fewer than six hours each night and individuals who report such short sleep times have in previous studies demonstrated an increased risk of developing diabetes. This new study examined whether reduced sleep duration itself may increase the risk of developing diabetes when combined with physical inactivity and overeating.

Researchers in this study subjected a group of healthy middle-aged men and women to two controlled 14-day periods of sedentary living with free access to food and 5.5 or 8.5 hour bedtimes. When the subjects had their bedtimes decreased from 8.5 hours to 5.5 hours they showed changes in their response to two common sugar tests, which were similar to those seen in people with an increased risk of developing diabetes.

"Our findings raise the possibility that when the unhealthy aspects of the Westernized lifestyle are combined with reduced sleep duration, this might contribute to the increased risk of many overweight and sedentary individuals developing diabetes," said Plamen Penev, MD, PhD, of the University of Chicago and a senior author of the study. "If confirmed by future larger studies, these results would indicate that a healthy lifestyle should include not only healthy eating habits and adequate amounts of physical activity, but also obtaining a sufficient amount of sleep."

Since the conclusions of this study are based on the detailed evaluation of a small group of subjects over a limited period of time under carefully controlled laboratory conditions, Dr. Penev emphasizes that additional intervention studies will be needed to examine the impact of habitual sleep curtailment on human glucose metabolism.

Global Warming

What Is Global Warming?

Global Warming is the changes in the surface air temperature or global temperature brought about by the enhanced greenhouse effect, which is induced by emissions of greenhouse gases into the air, and by fossil fuel burning and an increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and from pollution.

The build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere (beyond those levels required to sustain temperatures to support life on the planet) will result in catastrophic changes to the earth’s climate patterns.

Did Humans Cause Global Warming?
Both humans and nature have contributed to global warming in the 20th century.

The culprit of global warming have already been identified, such as:

Airplanes: causes 3.5% of global warming and could rise to 15% by 2050 according to The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Atmosphere and Ocean: The atmosphere contains about 750 billion tons of carbon, while 1,020 billion tons are dissolved in the surface layers of the world's ocean.

Building Structures: account for about 12% of carbon dioxide emissions.

Cars: carbon dioxide emissions comes from the burning of gasoline in internal-combustion engines of cars and light trucks (minivans, sport utility vehicles, pick-up trucks, and jeeps).

City Gridlock: wasted million gallons of gas annually while just sitting in traffic that translates to millions of carbon dioxide.

Deforestation: is responsible for 20-25% of all carbon emissions entering the atmosphere, by the burning and cutting of about 34 million acres of trees each year.

Methane: which is derived from sources such as rice paddies, bovine flatulence, bacteria in bogs and fossil fuel production. When fields are flooded, anaerobic conditions develop and the organic matter in the soil decomposes, releasing CH4 to the atmosphere, primarily through the rice plants.

Nitrous Oxide (N2O): a colorless, non-flammable gas with a sweetish odor, commonly known as "laughing gas", and sometimes used as an anesthetic. Naturally produced by oceans and rain forests. It is broken down in the atmosphere by chemical reactions that involve sunlight.

Permafrost: is a solid structure of frozen soil, extending to depths of 2.200 feet in some areas of the arctic and subarctic regions, containing grasses, roots, sticks, much of it dating back to 30,000 years. when the soil was attacked by microbes it will release carbon dioxide in the process.

Power Plants: carbon dioxide emissions stem from the burning of fossil fuels for the purpose of electricity generation.

Simple Ways To Prevent Global Warming.

- Avoid too much use of cars and think of an alternative. You can use train, a bicycle or take a walk going to school, work or any place just near to your place. Use the public transportation system rather than renting a car or relying on taxis. Exercise is good to our health and good to our environment.

- Change your air filter. Check your car's air filter monthly and save 800 lbs. of carbon dioxide.

- Use a push mower to mow the lawn. Use your muscles instead of fossil fuels and get some strength-building exercise and save 80 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year.

- Use compact fluorescent bulbs. Replace three frequently used light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs and save money and 300 lbs. of carbon dioxide.

- Replace old appliances and reduce reliance on them. Inefficient appliances (such as refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners) waste energy.

- Unplug unused electronics. Even when electronic devices are turned off, they use energy and save over 1,000 lbs of carbon dioxide.

- Recycle more by using recycling bins, composting, etc. Encourage neighbors, supervisors, colleagues, and businesses to do likewise (15-25% of people do not recycle).

- Use recycled paper and save 5 lbs. of carbon dioxide per ream of paper.

- Use Refills instead of buying new jars or bottles each time. This reduces your consumption and is usually cheaper.

- Buy minimally packaged goods to reduce your garbage and significantly saving 1,200 lbs. of carbon dioxide.

- Build power efficiency buildings and houses by utilizing wind or solar energy. Thermal mass and Passive solar buildings or houses lower our energy bills. We saved more money, we saved the earth.

- Insulate anything that uses energy to stay a different temperature from its environment. Be energy wise and insulate your entire home to keep down the heating and cooling costs.

- Find Eco tourism Opportunities when planning for a travel or vacation. Be a responsible traveler to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people. Let's conserve the environment to preserve its natural beauty.

- Grow fast growing plants like bamboo which produce 35% more oxygen than trees like oak or birch, and require fewer chemicals and care.

- Eat more vegetables than meat. Meat industry causes almost 40% more greenhouse gas emissions than all the world’s transportation systems, a recent United Nations report concluded. Let's make the earth green by eating more veggies than meat.

- Get Educated of what global warming is all about, how it affects each and everyone of us and the whole world in particular and get involved in making simple steps to avoid, prevent and minimize the impact of global warming to human.

Global warming is our global concern.

Cost Of Living

Cost of living, as defined, is the cost of maintaining a certain standard of living, generally measured by real income per person, access to quality health care, income growth inequality and educational standards and poverty rate.

The poverty line, is the minimum level of income deemed necessary to achieve an adequate standard of living in a given country. The common international poverty line has been roughly estimated to $1 a day, or more exactly $1.08 at 1993 purchasing-power parity (PPP).

The concept of a "standard" takes into account not only the material standard of living, but also other more intangible aspects such as leisure, safety, cultural resources, social life, physical health, environmental quality issues etc.

The 2006 official poverty statistics for the basic sectors shows that fishermen, farmers, and children comprised the poorest three sectors in 2006 with poverty incidences of 49.9%, 44.0%, and 40.8%, respectively. All sectors posted increases in poverty incidence between the period 2003 and 2006.

Also, the Philippines National Statistics Office (PNSO) Figures shows that the total Population in August 2007 reaches to 88.57M, with a Projected Population of 92.23M for 2009. Unemployment in July 2009 is 7.6% with Underemployment of 19.8% for the same year.

A July 2004 study on the UNDP Philippines website states that “most Filipinos especially in the rural areas barely survive on little more than fifty pesos a day (the international extreme poverty threshold is defined as $1 a day).

In effect, the $1 per day international poverty line was worth P12.31 per day in 2003. This is the equivalent of just P4,490 per year, less than $83 (using the BSP 2003 exchange rate).

For Expatriates, The cost of living in the Philippines is very low compared to other country, that is why more and more Expats are now living in the Philippines. This is due to the peso significantly losing much of its value since the Asian Financial Crisis.

If you have 200,000 Australian dollars, (That is almost 29 million pesos). You can live like a king here in the Philippines. A modest house will cost you 2 million pesos (Less than 56,000 Australian dollars) and if you are like you will receive your pension here directly from your government.

For Filipinos, the cost of living will be higher and higher for the coming days, months and years, most alarmingly because of the latest devastation brought by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng. According to the latest government assessment, the Philippines needs 1 year to recover from this destruction.

This means, the cost of living for Filipinos will be more costly for the coming days.

What the Bible Says...

What the Bible says about the Origin and Penalty for Sin.

  HOW DO ALL MEN SIN?

God created the first man and woman without sin. They have good fellowship with Him in the garden of Eden.
"And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day:" {Genesis 3:8}

But they disobeyed God and their good fellowship was broken. Man was cast out from the Garden of Eden.
"Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of  Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life." {Genesis 3:23 - 24}

Sin separates man from God.
"But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear." {Isaiah 59:2}
" And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities." {Isaiah 64:7}

And because of that, sin entered into the world.
"Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:" {Romans 5:12}

THE PENALTY FOR SIN?
 God is just and holy. Sin is an offence against a personal lawgiver and moral governor who vindicates his law with penalties. Sin must be paid for.
"Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off." {Romans 11:22}

The penalty for sin is Death.
"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:"
{Hebrews 9:27}

There are 2 kinds of Death.
- Physical Death
- Spiritual Death

1. Physical Death
   - This is the first death.
   - May be simply defined as the termination of life.
   - The cessation of life.
   - The separation of body and spirit."For as the body without the spirit is dead,"{James 2:26}

2. Spiritual Death
   - This is the second death,
   - It is the everlasting perdition of the wicked
   - The eternal separation of God and man.
   - Hell is man's final destiny
"But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death." {Revelation 21:8}
"And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death." {Revelation 20:14}

What the Bible Says...

What The Bible Says About Sin And Men?

WHAT IS SIN?

Sin is the transgression of the law of God"
"Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law." {1 John 3:4}

The great barrier between God and man is Sin.

Sin is the reason why Christ came into the world.
 "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" {John 1:29}.
"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." {Matthew 1:21}

Sin is rebellion against God - disobedience to His will.
"All unrighteousness is sin:" {1 John 5:17}

Sins are the product of our sinful nature. There are sins of thoughts, word or deeds.
"For in many things we offend all."
{James 3:2}

The essential step in knowing Christ in a personal way is to realize the existence of sin in our life.
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." {1 John 1:9}
"Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;" {Acts 3:19}

ARE ALL MEN SINNERS?

This question is often asked. And the answer is YES, ALL of us have sinned.
"As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:"
{Romans 3:10}
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;"
{Romans 3:23}
"If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us." {1 John 1:8}

"All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and
the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all." {Isaiah 53:6}

Papa, Mama, Why Did You Abandon Me?

I was once heard that children are a gift from God, thus, it needs special love and care.

But abandoned Children are scattered everywhere.

You can find them mostly on streets, roaming around begging alms, playing with friends or chased around by the authorities.

You will see some of them in their earliest years already working as shoe shine boy, newsboys, car wash boy or just simply manning parked motors and vehicles while waiting for the owners to come and shell out some coins for their unsolicited efforts.

The case of child abandonment is a global problem that tends to grow everyday rather than being addressed. The statistics will show us how ugly things are turning bad to worst.

Abandonment is the act of giving something up, Withdrawing support or help despite allegiance or responsibility. It is the worst scenario, when one or both of the parents abandon their parental responsibility.

Immediately, when the father or mother left the child, he is deprived of love and care, he lost protection and becomes vulnerable from abuse and attack, the psychological damage will surely take its tool as the child grows older, the sense of longing deepens as they compare themselves with others who has their parents.

The child will grow without proper education and discernment of what is right or wrong, they will become a mockery to other people they mingle everyday. They are victims and innocent, but the society will consider them rebellious and unwanted. We cannot solely rely on other people to take good care of our children.

The "Kindness of Strangers Theory" is not always applicable, as some of them victimizes on any known abandoned child. Child prostitution is the most common ending of an abandoned child or child enslavement, but to some, the end is early death. The lucky ones end up in a new family and grow as normal person, but not everyone is as lucky as the other.

Child abandonment was cause by different reasons like poverty, early pregnancy, separation, irresponsible parents, sickness, etc. The government on its part is doing everything to help the abandoned children but still it is not enough as the case is growing day by day. There is no even clearer laws and punishment for this kind of offense. The abandoned are really helpless and in hopeless case.

Unless the parents involve will open their hearts and mind on their undenying responsibility, child abandonment will never be ceased. It may be the last resort for parents to solve their domestic, monetary or marital bickering, but they have to consider the future of their God given children.

I know how it feels to be an abandoned child, because I am one of them.
